Geelong Venom is proud to announce the re-signing of co-captain Alex Sharp on a new one-year contract, securing one of the club’s most influential leaders through the next phase of its development.
A cornerstone of the Venom’s inaugural squad, Sharp has played a pivotal role both on and off the court, setting the standard for professionalism, competitiveness, and culture. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping the identity of the club, and her re-commitment signals strong continuity as the Venom builds toward sustained success.
Sharp’s impact extends beyond the WNBL, having represented the Australian Opals in the past year, further underlining her standing among the country’s elite talent. Prior to that, she gained valuable international experience competing in Spain with Estudiantes, continuing to develop her game against top-tier European competition.
In a reflection of her leadership credentials and standing within the organisation, Sharp was also a member of the club’s selection panel responsible for appointing newly announced Head Coach Cheryl Chambers.
Head Coach Cheryl Chambers welcomed the opportunity to work closely with Sharp.
“Alex is exactly the type of player and person you want leading your program,” Chambers said.
“She brings a fierce competitiveness, a high basketball IQ, and an unwavering commitment to her teammates. What stood out to me throughout the process was her investment in the future of this club — not just as a player, but as a leader. I’m excited to partner with her as we build something special at Geelong.”
Geelong Venom Board Member Michelle Gerdtz said Sharp’s re-signing was a key priority for the club.
“Alex represents everything the Geelong Venom stands for — leadership, integrity, and a deep commitment to team-first values,” Gerdtz said.
“Her contribution extends well beyond game day. The fact she also played a role in the appointment of Cheryl Chambers speaks to the trust and respect she has earned across the organisation. Securing her for another year is a significant outcome for the club.”
Sharp, who is currently completing her Master of Psychology at Swinburne University, said she was excited to continue her journey with the Venom.
“Geelong means a lot to me, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve started to build here,” Sharp said. “Being part of the process to appoint Cheryl and now having the chance to play under her is something I’m really looking forward to. There’s a strong foundation in place, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together over the next season.”
Sharp’s re-signing provides stability and leadership continuity as the Venom prepares for the upcoming WNBL season, with further roster announcements to follow in the coming weeks.
